Privacy & Security
Short Answer has adopted rigorous technical, administrative, and physical information security safe-guards to keep your data safe.
Designed to protect student data
We are committed to the requirements and responsibilities under key legislation such as the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), the Children’s Online Privacy and Protection Act (COPPA), and relevant state and district student data privacy laws and regulations.

Guard personally identifiable
information (PII)
Students use Short Answer by signing in with a code rather than creating an account, simplifying the onboarding experience (no rostering!) while ensuring we collect as little personally identifiable information as possible. Our team has worked hard to ensure that Short Answer prioritizes safety, security, and reliability. This commitment ensures we continually refine our platform to serve educators’ needs while upholding data privacy and content integrity.
Data privacy agreements (DPA) for schools and districts
We are committed to protecting personal and sensitive data with transparency, security, and in compliance with all applicable laws. We work with districts to sign District Data Privacy Agreements to ensure data is handled responsibly, securely, and only for its intended purpose.

Best practices in data privacy
We use rigorous technical, administrative, and physical information security safe-guards in line with National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) to keep your data safe, including (but not limited to):
- Penetration and vulnerability audits (audit reports available upon request)
- Data encryption in transit and at rest
- 24/7 threat detection and web application firewall protection powered by AWS
- Regularly updated incident response plan
- Automatic inactive account deletion
